Image of CigaretteAre You A Mum or Dad Wanting To Stop Smoking?

Breaking old habits can be easier said than done.  Changing unwanted habits can be difficult, as you are using the conscious part of your mind to make the changes.

Stop smoking hypnosis could help you to quit.  Hypnosis uses the subconscious part of the mind, the part that directs all your bodily functions such as breathing.  It is the part of the mind where memories, emotions/behaviour patterns and habits are stored.  Hypnosis re-educates the subconscious mind and can help you to break the smoking habit.

You don't have to learn how to self hypnotise yourself, Hypnotherapy Stop Smoking Self Hypnosis CDs could help you to stop smoking.

Being A Stay At Home Mum

Image of happy Mum with Son

Being A Stay At Home Mum

Mums Are Important Too recently conducted a survey and asked stay at home mums what they enjoyed and disliked about being a stay at home mum.

Many mums enjoyed spending quality time with their children and liked the flexibility of being able to organise their own day and being there for their children.

Here are some responses from stay at home mums

Mums Enjoyed

“Being able to take my children to school and collect them.  To be able to make all their plays/events at school, to be here if they need me for anything.

“Having time for simple things like reading or baking together”

“I like it all.  Being there when my son needs me.  Not ever feeling rushed in the morning.”

“Seeing my children day in day out and watching their every mile stone and every new thing they accomplish”

“Being able to see my baby’s firsts and be there for all his needs.

“I like the fact that I can organise my day and do what I want, when I want”

When the stay at home mums were asked what they disliked about being a stay at home mum, many mums experienced loneliness, boredom, lack of adult conversation, and for some a sense that their role as a Stay At Home Mum isn’t valued.

Here are some responses from stay at home mums

Mums Disliked

“I find it’s lonely and can get a bit boring if there is nothing that needs doing…..

“Loneliness, it can get very lonely and isolating being a stay at home mum”

“It is literally never ending – Sometimes I miss work for being able to have a break”

“I think the traditional role of being a stay at home mum or housewife isn’t valued in today’s society and that can sometimes get you down.  Makes you feel like “just” being a stay at home mum isn’t enough”

“Being with my children all day.  The monotony of parenthood:  the endless tidying and laundry.  The nappy changes, the crying, the lack of conversation, the having to be with them every minute of everyday.

“Loneliness, monotony, boredom, social aspects, attitudes of others”

How To Improve Your Child's Behaviour

Image of Mum telling off DaughterDoes Your Child's Challenging Behaviour Make You feel Stressed?

If the answer to that question is YES then read further.

Many Mothers have told me that their biggest stress as a Mother is their child's behaviour.
I am a Mum to 3 children myself (two of which are teenagers) and know too well how stressful it can be when kids play up.

Something I have learnt is that if you do
nothing to change how your child behaves, nothing changes.
As a result you continue to feel stressed and may
find that you don't enjoy family life as much as you should.

Do You Identify With Any Of The Following?

Are you often left frustrated and stressed out because
your child/ren won’t do what you tell them to do?
Do you find that you are constantly shouting at them?

Do you feel stressed when your Child/ren has a tantrum or misbehaves ?
Do you find it a nightmare when you take your Child/ren out and they play up?
Do the kids fight and bicker with their brother/s or sister/s?

If you can identify with any of the above and
would
like to turn things around and have
your children behave the way you would
like
then read further as I have a solution for you.

I have just read A Parent’s Guide To Children’s Behaviour Manual by Ruth Edensor.
It’s a 95 page e-book/on-line programme,
suitable for children aged between 0-16 years old.

I have found it very easy to read and it is rich in content
offering simple strategies to help you deal with your child’s challenging behaviour.
This behaviour management programme includes questions for you to answer and by working
through these sections it will help you to identify areas that may require change.
The e-book is split into a four weekly programme,
which gives you the opportunity to take on board the information and strategies
and begin to make some positive changes immediately.
It gives clear step-by-step coping strategies and
tells you how to deal with issues according to your child’s age.
As this behaviour programme is in an e-book style it
gives you the flexibility to work through the programme at your own pace.

This e-book/on-line programme is an affordable way
to make positive changes to your child’s behaviour,
reduce your stress levels and restore some peace to your home.

Stress Survival Q&A (Your Questions Answered)

I have just completed a Stress Survival Q&A for my list subscribers and have added it as a blog post, as the content is useful for any Mother or Father.

Question: " I find work stressful at times.  Do you have any reducing stress techniques that I could use at work?"

Answer:   There are many things you could do to reduce stress that you feel at work.  Here are a couple of suggestions:-

  1. Ensure you have a lunch break. If you don't have time for a lunch break, perhaps you could go into work 10-15 minutes earlier in a morning or stay a few minutes later on an evening.  You will have then created some time to take a break at lunch time.   Having a break from work, will help to reduce stress that has built up. Going out for a brisk walk at lunch time will give you a break away from the office.  The exercise will burn up any stress hormones and help you to feel good. (Before starting a new exercise regime, you should consult with your GP)
  2. When feeling stressed during work hours, you could use the Calming Breath Technique featured in the  Stress Survival  For Parents E-book - How To Stay Calm, Reduce Stress And Relax   .  Practice this technique to fully master it and then you will find that you should be able to quickly reduce the tension you feel inside.

Question:  "Ways to cope with my 8 year old daughter's anger outbursts, especially outside a busy school where it can be seen and heard by everyone"

Answer:  As I don't have the full details about this situation or have the information to know exactly how this situation makes you feel, the answer to this question is based on my own insight on how you might feel about this situation. We are all unique and respond differently to situations.

This is a similar situation i have experienced with my children and other mums will be able to relate to your  situation.  I imagine that you might feel stressed in anticipation of this situation arising and also when your daughter has her outbursts.   When encountering stressful situations there are two coping strategies to consider.

The first coping strategy could be to change how the situation makes you feel.   If the situation makes you feel stressed then reduce the tension you feel inside.  If you feel inner tension as you anticipate that your daughter might have an outburst a good way to reduce this stress would be to use the calming breath technique as featured in  Stress Survival  For Parents - How To Stay Calm, Reduce Stress And Relax.   This technique will help you to release the tension you feel inside and also keep your mind calm.  It will also be useful if you need to feel calmer during one of your daughters outbursts and it will also help your mind to stay in control.   Using this technique after a stressful situation could help you to calm down quickly and reduce stress.

How does it make you feel when others see and hear your daughters outbursts?    If it makes you have negative thoughts about yourself or your daughter change the way you think about the situation. We have the power to change our thoughts and feelings.

I remember an incident I had in the park when my youngest son was about 3 years old.  It took me 45 minutes to get him to leave the park and what a show he put on in front of many other Mothers.  Well at the time I was close to tears and all I could think about was what must the other mothers think about me.  I kept thinking that they must think I am not a very good Mother as my son wasn't doing what I was telling him to do.  A few weeks later one of the Mums that was in the park approached me and said how sorry she felt for me at the time.  It made me realise that I had made up my own thoughts to what people may be thinking.  My thoughts were just my reality of the situation. Most people who have children or have been around children will understand and have experienced similar situations. On occasions when my son plays up I no longer worry about what people may think.   Some people will make judgements and there is nothing that can be done about that.  What we can do is to change the way the situation makes us feel.  Let go of any negative thoughts and feelings.

A second coping strategy would be to deal/find a solution for the problem.   You might want to consider if there is anything that you can do within your power to change or influence  the circumstances around this situation with your daughter.  Just spending some time thinking about the question could help you to think about a possible solution for the problem with your daughter.   Or perhaps, if you need of a little extra help, seeking the help from a child behaviour expert could help you to find a solution.  You might want to check out the child behaviour page  at the Mums Are Important Too Website to help with behaviour management.

Exercise Burns Off Stress Hormones

Image of woman exercisingOne of the best ways to resuce stress and inner tension is to exercise.  Exercise burns up excess stress hormones and increases alpha waves (electrical patterns in the brain).  Alpha waves promote calmness. Exercise will also help you to feel good, as it increases endorphins in the brain.

True Happiness

True Happiness is about being happy on the inside.  Often people link happiness to a time in the future, believing that they will feel happier when they have certain material things in their possession, achieved certain goals.  These external things will bring some happiness but not total happiness.  You can increase your happiness NOW, by changing your feelings on the inside.

By changing your thoughts you can become happier.  Your quality of life is only as good as the quality of your thoughts.  You can increase happier feelings by changing your internal states (emotions/mood/feelings).  By visualising or thinking about pleasant things or memories you can create pleasant feelings.

Here's a technique to for you to try

Visualise an event or occasion that filled you with happiness.  Remember the event and fully associate with it.  Hear what you heard, see what you saw, and feel what you felt.  Perhaps you could close your eyes (if it is safe to do so) and really associate with the happy memory spending a minute or two really enjoying these happy feelings.  Use this technique whenever you need to give yourself a boost.

Christmas Stress Survival Tips For Mum

Stressed Mum At Christmas

Although Christmas is a time of celebration, it also brings with it extra pressure.  The weeks leading up to Christmas create more demands on time.  There are so many tasks that you have to do to prepare for Christmas, on top of your usual commitments.

There’s the Christmas present shopping, present wrapping, cards to write, present and card delivering, Christmas grocery shopping, Kids Christmas plays to attend and Christmas Do’s.  There is no wonder that you are more likely to feel physically drained and stressed at this time of the year.  Below are 5 Coping Strategies For Mum To Reduce Festive Stress.

Have A Bath.  Having a bath after a busy day will help you to relax and unwind.  Water is therapeutic and helps lower stress hormones that have built up during the day.  It will help you to reduce inner tension and ease tense muscles.

  • Seek Help From Family Members.  With the extra work to prepare for Christmas, maybe you could delegate some Christmas preparation or house chore tasks to other family members if they are willing to help.
  • Be Organised.  Don’t leave everything until the last minute.
  • Have Short Rest Breaks.  If you have a busy day with 101 things to do, ensure that you have frequent short rest breaks.  Perhaps a few minutes sit down with a drink.  I know this might be the last thing on your mind if you are a busy Mother.    Having frequent short breaks will give you a break from the demands, which will help you to reduce stress and re-energise.
  •  Use Relaxation Techniques To Alleviate Stress.  Relaxation Techniques switch off the stress response and can be used whenever you need to de-stress.  Relaxation Techniques produce a relaxation response, so they are beneficial to use after a busy or stressful day, as a way to de-stress, unwind and relax.

How Do You Want Your Children To Behave?

Guest Blog Post

Do you find the more your child misbehaves the more you think about it and the more you think about it the worse it gets?  Then it's time to take a step back and think about how you really want your child to behave.

By taking the time to regularly think about how you would like your child to behave you will find yourself focusing more on their good behaviour and encouraging more of that.

It is vital that you pay more attention to how you would like your children to behave because children will do more of what they get attention for and by thinking about how you would like your child to behave you will start to ask yourself the right questions about how you can get your child to behave in that way.

For example, if you feel that your child is unco-operative and never helps you out and you would like your child to be more co-operative and helpful, stop saying to yourself my child is unco-operative and never helps me out and start to ask yourself,

"How can I get my child to be more co-operative and helpful?"

This way you will start to come up with the answers you need.

You can start to think about how you want your child to behave by making a list of 5 behaviours you don't like and making them into a positive statement instead like the one above.

For example,

I hate my child moaning and crying to get what they want,

change it into a positive.........,

I want my child to ask nicely for what they want

Now think of ways that you can encourage this behaviour

  • only let them have what they want if they ask nicely
  • Don't give into their crying and tantrums
  • Praise them when they ask nicely
  • ..................add more ideas

By focusing on the behaviour that you want from your child, your mind will look for the answers of how to get it.  Give it a try and let me know how you get on...

If you like this idea and would like more, you can find a comprehensive guide to your child's behaviour in my book;

3 Coping Strategies To Save Your Sanity During The School Holidays

image of stressed womanThe school holidays can be a very stressful time for Mums & Dads.   The following coping strategies may help to reduce stress that you feel during this time.

Coping Strategies To Help You Create Inner Harmony

1.  When the children are making you feel stressed and you need to reduce stress and tension that you feel, use the following breathing technique:-

  • You will need to breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth
  • As you breathe in, take slow deep breaths and at the same time push out your stomach muscles
  • Hold this breath as you count to 3.
  • Slowly exhale through your mouth pulling in your stomach muscles whilst saying the words 'calm' or peace' in your mind.
  • Repeat the technique 2 to 4 times

This breathing technique may take a few practices to master.

2.   After a long day with the kids you deserve some time for yourself.   When your husband/wife/partner returns home from work or when the children have gone to bed, then allow some much needed time for you, even if its only for 20 minutes or so.   Do something nice for yourself, perhaps give yourself a manicure, read a good book or do some other activity that you enjoy.   Having some 'me-time' is a great way to unwind and relieve stress.

3.   Do you dread the house being in a mess when the kids are off? One way to deal with the stress of this situation is to change the way that you think about it.   Instead of thinking negatively about the mess - " I can't stand this mess", change your thoughts to something like " All these toys lying on the floor mean that the kids have enjoyed themselves playing".   When you think about things in a different context it is likely that you will view the situation differently and your level of stress will be reduced.

You could then ask the kids to help you tidy up.   Reward the kids for helping you.   The reward doesn't have to be something that financially costs - younger kids may enjoy receiving a sticker for helping.   Another reward could be spending some quality time with the kids.     Tell them that if they help to tidy up you will do something nice with them.

Relaxation Is An Antidote To Stress

Image of woman listening to musicStress is a part of life and is something that you can't fully avoid.   Being a Parent brings with it tensions and pressures.

The demands placed on the body, be it physically, emotionally or mentally trigger the stress response (also known as the fight/flight response).   When you encounter a trigger the stress response is switched on in the body and chemicals are released around the body, which gives the body extra resources to prepare it for fight or flight.

Going back to caveman days, this stress response was essential to provide extra bodily resources when the cavemen where in dangerous threatening situations such as encountering furious beasts.   The chemicals produced by the body would provide the caveman with either extra strength to fight the beast or extra bodily resources so the caveman could run quicker.   The physical activity from fighting or fleeing would burn up any excess chemicals and after the situation was over the stress response would return to the pre-stress state.

In modern times we do not have to fight or flee beasts and we can not burn up the excess chemicals in the same way that the cavemen did.   In modern times the stress response is useful if you have to deal with an emergency threatening situation.   The  body would be provided with extra  resources to deal with the situation.   There are other modern day situations that the stress response is  benefical.   If  you were taking a driving test, then the pressure from this situation would trigger the stress response and provide your body with extra concentration.

If you encounter stressful situations, pressures and tensions on a regular basis and do nothing to relieve the stress then this can have a damaging effect on  your body and wellbeing.   Prolonged or excessive stress can have an effect on your physical, emotional and mental health.

Deep Relaxation is one antidote to reducing stress.   Relaxation Techniques produce a relaxation response in the body by turning off the flight and fight response.   Deep relaxation does not mean watching television after a busy day or listening to music, although these are benefical but these types of activity do not produce deep relaxation.

Hypnosis and other relaxation techniques can create deep relaxation.   Hypnosis is benefical as it relaxes the body and helps the stress chemicals to subside.     You can benefit from hypnosis in the form of self-hypnosis CD's or MP3's.   Using Relaxation Techniques on a regular basis will be beneficial, daily if possible.     Deep Relaxation is one element of reducing stress.   Other Stress Management elements should be included in your life to gain most benefit.

A Celebration Of Mother's Day.......

Have you ever wondered where Mother's Day originated from? Well, it dates back to when children were in domestic service and were given one day off a year, to visit their Mother.  On their way home they would pick flowers for their Mother.

Later on in History, it was Anna Jarvis who campaigned to honour Mothers and Motherhood and the first official Mother's Day was celebrated at the beginning of the 19th century as a tribute to all Mothers, as a recognition of all that they do.

Mums Are Important Too would like to wish YOU a Happy Mother's Day.

Enjoy your special day Mum.  You deserve it!
